Emerging environmental issues 2012
A compilation of global environmental alert service bulletins
GEAS in 2012 covered issues of global importance such as the relationship between food prices and cheap oil, the impact of
meat production on greenhouse gas emissions, the Earth’s Carrying capacity, and environmental indicators and goals. Other
topics were regional, but offer warning signs for the world, such as the shrinking glaciers in Africa and the Himalayas, and the
drying of Iran’s Lake Urmia. Combined, these alerts show that the pulse of the planet is increasing as a result of a variety of
stressors. As the May 2012 GEAS reported, “Although there have been some improvements in the environmental realm, in
too many areas the environmental ‘dials’ continue to head into the red.”
